My posts | Vista why?

2008-02-17 12:07 - Vista why?

So I was working, that happens sometimes, when suddenly, without ANY warning my computer flips to the underwater greenish sludge screen called "Windows is configuring updates.", followed by a reboot.

That means all my recent work lost, and all my open windows closed - if it wasn't for the nearly mystical "restore last session" feature from Firefox, for what?!??

It'd better be A very important update!

So I check the update installation log after 10 minutes. Vista, because it is a very secure OS with numerous features to enhance security for both Microsoft and other copyright holders, though for some reason not really for the end-user, requires an average reboot time of over 10 minutes. That is not a problem, that is a feature, because it allows me to make more coffee.

Back to the update log: I see one update installed. KB938371. It states:

"Install this update to enable future updates to install successfully on all editions of Windows Vista. This update may be required before selected future updates can be installed. After you install this item, you may have to restart your computer. Once you have installed this item, it cannot be removed."

So I had to lose my work because there might be updates in the future which might or might not install without this update?!????

That's it. I've tried to keep up with Vista whilst being ridiculed by everyone else who was simply using XP or, even better, Ubuntu. Why? Not because I require DX10, I don't have the gfx card for that. Not because I want the glitter and glamor, Ubuntu does that better anyway. Certainly not because of all the DRM enabled "safety features" which allow me to be safe in the fact that I'm a criminal even though I buy everything. But, mainly, because a reinstall of the average Windows based OS is such a hassle, and I ought not have time for that.
